Getting cited in AI search

What causes citation, why brands are missed, how to improve, and how to measure it

What a citation means here

A citation occurs when ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity uses your page as a source while generating an answer and surfaces its URL as attribution.

This is distinct from a mention. A mention is your brand name appearing in the answer text; a citation is a link being shown as the source. A brand named without a link counts as one mention and zero citations.

Because citations drive referral traffic as well as awareness, most visibility programs weight them more heavily than mentions.

Why a brand is not cited

"We never show up in AI answers" almost always resolves to one of four stages. Work through them in order.

1. Never retrieved

AI crawlers cannot fetch the page, or it is absent from the search index consulted during answer generation. Content quality is irrelevant at this stage.

2. Retrieved but dropped in reranking

The page is fetched but loses to others. This is common when the body text never answers the question directly.

3. Survived reranking but lost in summarization

Pages mixing several topics lose the relevant part when compressed. This is the cost of not keeping one page to one intent.

4. Judged not worth attributing

The page states only what many others also state. A model attributes a source when that source holds a fact the others do not.

Do not guess which stage is failing. Repeatedly capturing answers together with their source URLs separates "never a candidate" from "a candidate that lost".

What cited pages have in common

The answer is stated in the body text

The conclusion appears as prose, not only inside an image, a diagram, or structured data. Models quote body text.

It carries a fact available nowhere else

Measured numbers, pricing, process, decision criteria. Generic explanation gives a model no reason to attribute you specifically.

Fragments still make sense on their own

Text that depends on earlier paragraphs breaks once extracted. Aim for self-contained paragraphs.

How to improve citation rate

  1. Hypothesize the question space. The prompts users actually type are never exposed, so start from the questions your business should own.
  2. Observe repeatedly to establish a baseline. Answers vary between runs; measure mention and citation rate across trials rather than one-off checks.
  3. Read the sources that beat you. Often the winner is explainer media or user-generated content rather than a competitor product page, which means the gap is missing information, not a rival.
  4. Answer that question on one page. Decide whether an existing page can absorb it. If the intent duplicates an existing page, do not create a new one.
  5. Re-observe next cycle. Deepen branches that responded, abandon ones that did not.

Measuring citations

Citations count how often your URL is presented as a source. Definitions for the related metrics — Mentions, Placements, Response Share, Referral Traffic — are in What is AEO. Since generated answers have no fixed ranking, all of these are ratios across repeated trials rather than positions.

Sighted — observe citations and trace the source URL

Sighted observes mentions and citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity daily, handles the variance statistically, and records which URL was cited.
