The Sighted MethodologyA Complete Guide to AI Visibility Optimization
Measure, Diagnose, Optimize, Monitor, Iterate. Five phases that replace guesswork with data-driven AI Visibility improvement.
Why a Systematic Approach Is Necessary
Most companies attempting AI Visibility improvement start with scattered tactics: "publish more content," "add structured data." They stall because the Measure-Diagnose-Optimize-Monitor-Iterate cycle is not running.
The Sighted Methodology was derived from our own 120-day improvement journey and the 109-question GPR experiment. Five phases, executed in sequence, replace guesswork with data-driven AI Visibility improvement.
The Five Phases
Measure
2-3 weeksDiscover your Question Space and establish baselines
Use the URL-First approach to visualize your Question Space. Capture Mention Rate, Citation Rate, Response Share, and Placements baselines.
Actions
- Discover your domain's Question Space
- Set up 10 brand + 20 industry queries
- Accumulate 2 weeks of baseline data
- Map 3-5 competitors' Question Spaces
Diagnose
1 weekIdentify gaps and set improvement priorities
Compare baselines against industry benchmarks. Determine maturity stage. Run competitive Question Space overlap analysis to find content gaps.
Actions
- Compare scores against industry benchmarks
- Determine your maturity stage
- Analyze Mention vs Citation gap patterns
- List competitor-only questions
Optimize
4-8 weeks (ongoing)Improve content, technical foundations, and entities
Execute improvements across three layers based on diagnosis. Content citability, technical readability, and entity clarity.
Actions
- Create content for gap questions (6 structural patterns)
- Optimize structured data and AI crawler access
- Enrich entity information (About, author, Organization)
- Deepen existing content's self-containedness
Monitor
OngoingTrack intervention effects continuously
Measure Mention Rate and Citation Rate weekly. Evaluate Response Share and maturity progression monthly.
Actions
- Weekly: Record Mention Rate and Citation Rate changes
- Monthly: Evaluate Response Share, Placements, AEO Score
- Track correlation between intervention dates and metric changes
- Watch for new emerging questions
Iterate
Quarterly cycleRefine strategy based on data
Feed monitoring data back into diagnosis. Update optimization targets as the Question Space evolves and competitive landscape shifts.
Actions
- Re-discover Question Space quarterly
- Update competitive analysis monthly
- Identify low-impact interventions and pivot
- Evaluate maturity progression and plan next stage transition
Three Core Principles
1. No intervention without measurement
Every intervention starts with baseline measurement and ends with impact measurement. "Seems like it helped" is not acceptable.
2. Question Space is the origin
The URL-First discovered Question Space drives all analysis and action. We reverse-engineer from AI's cognitive structure, not human assumptions.
3. Staged maturation
Follow the Maturity Model stages sequentially. Stage 1 companies attempting Stage 4 tactics see limited results. Start with interventions appropriate to your current stage.
Phase-to-Resource Map
| Phase | Key Resource | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Measure | Question Space map | Question Space, Tools Guide |
| Diagnose | Maturity assessment, benchmarks | Maturity Model, Benchmarks |
| Optimize | Content and technical improvements | Citation Patterns, AEO Framework |
| Monitor | Measurement stack | Measurement Stack, GA4 Analysis |
| Iterate | Competitive analysis, re-evaluation | Competitive Framework |
Start with the Measure Phase
The first step of the methodology is understanding where you stand. Enter your domain to discover your Question Space.
